In the summer of 2010 I was notified that I was a recipient of the FINRA Military Spouse Fellowship for financial counseling. I was excited for the new challenge and a little scared of what I had gotten myself into. I was very busy already, volunteering, working on my Masters degree, and had two young children but I was definitely up for the task.
This summer it will be six years since I accepted the Fellowship and I couldn’t be happier of where that decision has taken me in my career and also in my personal life. My finances have never looked better and the decisions my husband and I make now are a direct result of the education and experience I received from completing the program.
Often I tell people, especially military spouses, that sometimes a career finds you. Before marrying my husband, I had no previous military affiliation and no idea what I was getting into. A few short years after my spouse had been active duty I knew I wanted to help support other military spouses and families. I wanted to be able to share my experiences and knowledge to try to make it easier for other spouses to assimilate into the military community.
After being awarded the Fellowship, I knew that the knowledge would give me another way to support other military families and I couldn’t be more pleased with how it all worked out.
